Notes: The entirety of North Carolina’s coastline is comprised of barrier islands, and these islands are where I surf the most. One island in particular, uninhabitable and accessible only by boat (or if you’re up to it, paddling your surfboard across the channel) is the favorite of my surf crew— at times, it is absolutely magic for waves. It used to be somewhat of a secret spot, but with the advancements in meteorology, surf forecast apps, and communications technology (the freaking cellphone), it gets way too crowded way too often for our liking these days. However, if you know how to read the wind and swell, not just the prediction on a surf forecasting app, you can still catch it almost empty on days when lazier and less knowledgeable folks decide to skip. I took this drone photo on one of those days— the waves were perfect, the sun was out, and we had the beach to ourselves. That’s my buddy Andy at the bottom of the photo, walking into an empty lineup of perfect waves— there no more beautiful sight to a surfer.
