Notes: Whenever possible, I like to surf on New Years Eve and then again the next day on New Year’s Day. Ending the year with a good surf with my friends makes me grateful to have survived another year, and reminds me of what is truly important in life. Starting off the New Year by surfing reminds me to stay humble and realize how small my place is in the universe— nothing will put your ego in check like being in the ocean, because she is the boss and will definitely let you know that. I got good waves on this New Year’s Eve, then decided to take my waterproof housing out to shoot my friends— it was cold, rainy, and the waves were pretty big and rough that day. Swimming while holding a heavy camera rig in the middle of a bunch of surfers in these conditions was a little sketchy, but my friends were ripping, so I was happy to do it— I trust them, as they are all good surfers with excellent board control. My buddy Ryan laughed as he threw a bunch of freezing cold spray in my face as I took this shot— happy New Year!
